To Michael Moore

Friday, August 27th, 2010

As you know, from time to time I’ve decided to write letters to different known persons or semi big sites online about Flattr. This time the intent was not to write about Flattr, but I did a short namedrop. This time it was about a little bit more personal praise, but I still want to share it with you guys!

Hello Mr. Moore
My name is Marie Axelsson, I’m 24 years old and I love in Sweden.
I’m not sure in which end to being, so I’ll just take it from the top. I hadn’t much heard of you until I was 16, turning 17, 7.5 years ago now. I went to a children/youth film festival in the south of Sweden and saw your documentary Bowling for Columbine in one of the many cinemas in Malmö, which I can’t recall at this moment. Parts of the movie I could hardly see without feeling squeamish, but it was a really good docu and I re watched it many times after that in the coming years.
For some reason back then I never got around to reading any of your books, even tho they were on my lists of books to read. But I had so many books, and so many lists that it just fell apart and I concentrated on the ones more important for school at that particular time. Yesterday I started reading Stupid White Men, while reading the first part of it where you call on normal citizens to take action and stand up for what they believe in and run in an election it just fit so perfectly, and I was really really glad that I hadn’t read any of that before.

I’m a member of the Pirate Party here in Sweden, who just struck a deal to host Wikileaks (saw that you contributed to defense fund of accused WikiLeaker Pfc. Bradley Manning) here in Sweden. I’m also a candidate for the Parliament in this year’s election, and we got less than a month left, 19th of September is the day.
We ourselves are all concerned citizens when it comes to all the “Big Brother Laws”, and some of the copy right issues. I’m convinced that a man like you would have read up on this, and do not hate us just because we believe in sharing, remixing and free culture and knowledge. Most people don’t even understand the Copy Rights Laws, which is kinda of sad. I’m not writing this mail to ask for your support or anything, I just wanted to tell you that even tho Stupid White Men has a few years on its neck, and even tho I’ve just read the first 115 or so pages of the hardcover, Swedish translation, it still feels very accurate in many ways. I would have read it in English, which was my original plan for many years, but got to borrow it from a friend now.
Here is usually where I would make this letter commercialised by telling you about a Swedish founded Social Micro Donation System (that Wikileaks also uses now) and how I would love to be able to Flattr each of your Chapters. But I will skip that part.

I will just stick to telling you that even tho you are very blunt, and somewhat hilarious in what you write, it’s easy to get lost and thinking that it’s all a big joke, it’s scary to see the facts involved around it. I just finished reading the part about school, and that you wanted to skip a grade when you were young. I think it’s a problem in today’s system, in a lot of countries I assume, but especially here in Sweden, that you usually don’t get to skip grades. Or when you have you move and get put back one grade and go a full year “redoing” everything you did last year, just because you moved.

Part of our politics is to move on to the Information and Knowledge Society.
Nam et ipsa scientia potestas est
Knowledge is Power, you know it, I know it, and they who want to keep it to themselves know it very well.

I could continue writing you a whole essay, but I think I will stop here, for this time at least. I thank you for your time, and all the great effort you’ve put into making your amazing documentaries, series and books, yes I probably missed something and I apologize for that. I’m well aware that my letter does not contain much of questions only lots of praise, but I hope I will hear from you!

I write and blog some, but mostly in Swedish. http://maloki.redhog.org and http://mlokit.wordpress.com, will also publish this e-mail on my blog.

Ready for Flattry?

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

It’s time for the big guys to get into the game and implement Flattr into their sites. Who will be first to offer this to their users? Will it be Github, Disqus, DeviantArt, Google (youtube & blogger accounts especially), Flickr, Wordpress.com, Wordpress.org and so forth.

Tonight I started out with mailing to some of them, I started with writing a mail to Github since a friend of mine working on Etherpad Foundation, and I’ve been wanting to flattr his work there, I thought it was a good place to start.

Hello there. I’m a big flattr fan, not a big coder tho. But i have alot of friends who use Github for their codes.

On http://github.com/redhog/pad for example Redhog has added the url to flattring the work he’s done with the pad. https://flattr.com/thing/6213/Etherpad-RedHog-branch

http://blog.flattr.com/2010/07/looking-for-integration-partners/ Flattr’s REST-API is almost ready to go, and now they are looking for Partners.
I’ve previously pointed out to different services that they could implement Flattr, or should when avaliable for them to do so.

I think this would be a great way for you guys to join into the new era of showing appriciation.

Kind Regards
Marie

Then I thought of DeviantArt and a few friends I have that uses it, so I filled out one of their support/contact forms and sent it in as well.

Hello there. I have alot of friends who use DeviantArt, but I myself do not. I would tho, love to be able to through them having their flattr account, and flattr buttons with their art.

Flattr is currently looking for integration partners. ANd I’m personally hoping that you guys will be one of the first to get there. http://blog.flattr.com/2010/07/looking-for-integration-partners/

Flattr is a nice way to show appriciation, and add a little money to it. I really hope you will concider it. Read more here http://flattr.com

Kind Regards
Marie

I also decided to e-mail Alexandre Saboundjian at Jamendo as well.

I really love the concept of Jamendo, for sharing freely licensed music with the rest of the world in an easily order. One thing I really hope you guys should offer your users is the opportunity to add their Flattr button to their account and their music. Flattr is a social micro donation system, which lets you show flattery to other peoples content online with a flat-rate each month.
This would just make Jamendo just even more awesome, for all users.

They are now looking for partners to integrate with their REST-API when it finishes, and I think this could be a great thing for you guys. I’m really looking forward to seeing you guys take the lead with some of the other great sites online with integrating Flattr early on.

Kind Regards
Marie

I also e-mailed Soundclound through their contact.

Flattr is looking for partners to integrate with. Flattr is a social micro donation system that allows it’s users to share content and flattr content. Basically if you find something you like that has a flattr button attached to it. I have a friend who uses both Flattr and Soundcloud, currently he has just implemented the url to his Soundcloud item, it would tho have been nicer looking and easy on the eye if one could have Flattr as an opt-in for users who want to add it to their song.

I’m hoping that Flattr will be a big thing and I have a vision about it, it was only written in Swedish tho, but can be read here.
I’m also hoping that you guys will be one of the first who implement this for their users.

Kind Regards
Marie

Of course I want to see it on Wordpress.com.

Hello there! I’ve been a big Flattr-fan since it rolled out, and it’s fully avaliable through plugins when you have a self-hosted blog.

It would be awesome if Wordpress.com would be an early adopter and get it rolled out for their users on their blogs tho.
Currently they are looking for partners to be ready to roll out with them when they finish their REST-API http://blog.flattr.com/2010/07/looking-for-integration-partners/

I’m really hoping to see you be early on with this, especially since I really like wordpress.com.

Kind Regards
Marie

And for Wordpress.org I contacted Matt, via Email.

I just sent off a support/contact mail to Wordpress.com where I’m asking them about the possibility to integrate Flattr to it now when their REST-API is getting ready. Now for Wordpress.org i’m more thinking about it for all the developers on site, and the people who does a good work on the support forum. Having a Flattr-button implemented in the forum, will offer people the incentive to offer even better support, and users will be able to show appreciation for the support given.
Also, for all the developers, be it themes, plugins or other, they will also get an opportunity to get some extra support for all their free time they put in to some of the work. Which also could result in premium stuff trying a new approach and being “free” and only trying out being flattrd. I believe this would be a great step in the right direction.

Flattr.com is a site for social micro donations. You register, and are then able to flatter people, to a flat-rate, at your choosing, each month. You can also be flattrd yourself. I’m in love with the concept and believe it’s part of the future on the internet, and in the “offline world” as well. Hopefully we’ll see Wordpress being early on implementing this to the joy of their users, developers and all.

Kind Regards
Marie

I’ve mailed Disqus at a previous time as well. Right now is really a good time to show that big site you use that you would want to have flattr there!
I’m also hoping to inspire others to write a letter to their favorite artist, website or other whatever service online and say that they want to flattr them, or wish them for some reason to implement Flattr in their service.

I want to, together with the Flattr-community that we already have and the Pirate and Activist community that I am part of, lead the way by setting a good example and showing that this really works. We are all responsable to help Flattr reach Critical Mass!

Dag 9: Mys i Skärhamn

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Nerderi! Vi ordnar kaffe! Filter, Melitta, Ätpinnar, 1litermått!

We HAZ COFFEEH!!

I did it again! (Flattr)

I decided to write another letter about Flattr to a site I think should implement it, and I have a feeling it will not be the last. A few days ago I wrote to Stephenie Meyers webmaster. This time I decided that we need a way for it to get spread a bit more in comments, for all them people who use Disqus, so I decided to write them a letter. Instead of choosing the hello mail I chose the biz one. Since it sort of is a business thing, Flattr can become the new businessmodel!

Hello there! I really like your community and the comment feature in general.
I have a proposal/wish tho. There’s a new thing called Flattr which lets you flatter people you think create something good on the internet, but Flattr puts a bit of money behind it, sort of like a tipjar. It’s a wordplay of Flatter and Flat-rate. In order to be flattrd you have to contribute atleast €2 a month, which you can use to flattr others. Watch the youtube video and/or Peter Sundes talk about it on Republica earlier this year if you are more curious.

I’m not an official member of the Flattr-crew but just a fan girl who’s become quite obsessed with spreading the word about this crazy cool thing.

It would be cool if you could find a way to implement it to your site, so that people could get their flattr buttons up on comments on blogs that use your commentary field.
Flattr is still in Beta, and you need invites to join, but if you guys are interested I’m willing to set your entire crew up with invites so you can try it out and have a look.

Take Care

Marie Axelsson

I’m also hoping to inspire others to write a letter to their favorite artist, website or other whatever service online and say that they want to flattr them, or wish them for some reason to implement Flattr in their service.

I want to, together with the Flattr-community that we already have and the Pirate and Activist community that I am part of, lead the way by setting a good example and showing that this really works. We are all responsable to help Flattr reach Critical Mass!

Thank you Netopia!

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

I just wrote the following letter to Stephanie Meyer (well her Webmaster):

Hello Seth!
You are a great little brother to help your sister out with the webmastering, and I like the site, so I guess you’re doing a great job at it as well ;)
I read an article (swe) that linked to Midnightsun, and realised that I wasn’t in need to comment the article, I should contact Stephenie, well you in this case, directly.
To cut to the chase I want to introduce a new means of earning some extra pennies on the stuff on it. Which is through a social micropaying system called Flattr, watch this small introduction video on youtube it describes it quite well I think. But basicly through a flatrate fee each month you get to flattr other people’s content, and your fee is split into as many other things you’ve decided to flattr.
To give some examples of the possibilities of it the news site Netzpolitik made €576 in June. And I myself, just being a blogger and general helper online got €15.
The system is still in Beta testing, and you need an invite to join, but I would be glad to offer one if you were interested!
Here is also a list of things I’ve written about Flattr.

I’m hoping you and your sister will concider joining the revolution of how to earn money of your creations online! And that I’ll be the first to Flattr you! :)

Take care

So what basicly happend was that I got linked by a friend to his comment on the Netopia article, that I refered to in the beginning of my letter.
The article itself is basicly bashing Pirates for having released the early draft of Midnightsun. But it got spread from a person she trusted to read this early draft. A comment points out that Pirates aren’t a homogeneous group, and I agree with that. Moving on.
There are other means of making money, but what if, they don’t realise that these business models are out there? I can understand that people are afraid to try new things and what not. Anyhow it resulted in me writing a letter to Stephenie Meyers little brother webmaster instead. Informing him of this new cool thing called Flattr!

Who do you want to Flattr? Write them a letter, feel free to remix what I wrote!

I will end this as I ended my earlier post today

I want to, together with the Flattr-community that we already have and the Pirate and Activist community that I am part of, lead the way by setting a good example and showing that this really works. We are all responsable to help Flattr reach Critical Mass!

Flattr wp-test 0.9.8

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Wroom wroom.

Testing again. If you can offer, flattr this and lets see if the tags work!! *mumbles*

Edit: Unless you feel I’m just amazingly cool, hot, sexy and whatever for helping the flattr crew testdriving the wordpress plugin before release, I bid you not to flattr this anymore. Just needed the first click for submission and it should be set now!
Thanks everyone for the help. Lets look forward to the update after the weekend!

Flattr testrun plugin

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Please do not poke and flattr stuff that clearly is Egil’s when pages are activated. Thanks

I’m currently testrunning the 0.9.7 plugin before release, and I need to see if the tags get applied to the thing when added via getting flattrd on site.
If you are willing to offer one of your clicks for this post I’d be most greatful.

Anything that is going on at my page right now is only becuase of this testdriving. So no worries if the whole thing blows up next time you press something.

Update: Poked, prodded and found about 5 things that could be off interest. Thanks for the help, and the opportunity!

Flattr: Put your money where your mouth is

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Some of you might have noticed that I’ve become quite interested in the whole Flattr project. It’s even gone so far for me to call myself Flattr Whore on their forum. No I’m not obsessed, I promiss!

You might wonder, how does this relate to Pirate Party politics? I’ll make it short because in a way it doesn’t and in a way it does. It doesn’t relate to the politics per say since it’s about money, but it relates to the ideology of Sharing is Caring. For that reason I want to support this.

The side fact that Flattr has consists of an amazingly nice and helpful team, and volounteers, especially on the forum side, just makes it so much better.
I guess that somewhere I’ve gotten stuck in volounteer work. I like doing stuff that I feel gives me something in return. Being active on the flattr forum, trying out the plugins on this blog, I updated everything lastnight.

Since I like the philosophy I’ve gotten quite intense. It’s started alot of thoughts around Flattr [swe] and how you can use it. I also wrote some thoughts about Flattr and social pressure that noone should stand out (swe)
Today I’ve posted 2 suggestions and 1 request on the forum.
Suggestions were Premium Invites, give an invite with money on it already. Co-op accounts/groups, basicly to be able to attatch more accounts to an account.
And after having been flooded with flattrs (unfortunately I found it unflattring, I’m sorry!) I also suggested, rather Requested: “Newest” – Collapse multiple things from same user

A few days ago I suggested:
Add/vote for tags, Lists – Integration and Bulk Edit Things which quicky got response from the Staff.

Flattr will be the revolutionary way that we can give creators the extra appriciation we want to give them. We can finally put our money where our mouth is! If you havn’t seen Peter Sunde at Re:publica yet, please do. Oh, and while you’re there you might want to follow their blog.

Please, tell me about 3 people/projects you would like to be able to flattr, but they don’t have an active account yet, and non the less tell them that you would like to flattr them, and offer an invite!

(don’t miss that when you comment you can add your flattr ID! edit: now it should work, lol. plugins updated again!)

Flattr plug-ins ftw!

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Idag har jag piffat upp bloggen med att vi har integrerat Flattr på sidan här nu också. Underbar Plug-in för Wordpress.
